Fluvastatin methyl ester is a synthetic drug that is a prodrug of fluvastatin. It has the same mechanism of action as other statins, inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which controls cholesterol synthesis in the liver. Fluvastatin methyl ester can be used for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia.
This drug is not active orally and must be administered by injection or intravenously. The solvents used to prepare this compound are benzene and chloroform. After the solvent evaporates, the product is purified using filtration and then crystallized with sodium chloride or hydrochloric acid. It is also possible to synthesize fluvastatin methyl ester using 6-chloropurine as a starting material.
